Two lawyers have joined Mountain Dearborn, expanding the firm’s estate planning and litigation services. Joseph Cabrera brings his command of language to his work in trusts and estates. Jason Kent draws from years of experience working in the rail industry to his courtroom strategies.
A Student of Language
An assiduous reader since childhood, Joseph Cabrera places a high value on precise language. That attention to detail, combined with deep research skills, serves him well as he helps clients plan how to allocate their resources among future generations. “No one wants to leave a legacy of doubt,” he says. A student of sociolinguistics, Joe loves diving into texts, reading closely, writing clearly, and finding creative solutions to estate planning problems.
Before joining Mountain Dearborn as an Associate in 2021, Joe worked in a personal injury firm in his home-town of East Longmeadow, Mass. In law school at Notre Dame, he served as an extern at the Staff Attorney’s Office of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, participated in Notre Dame’s Community Development Clinic, and performed pro bono work for Kentucky citizens though his virtual Appalachia externship.
From Freight Engineer to Courtroom Litigator
A skilled courtroom advocate for his clients, Jason Kent tackles cases ranging from simple contract disputes to complex, high-value litigation matters, all with a common-sense approach honed by years of real-world experience. His ability to quickly assess and distill issues to their fundamentals creates exceptional value for his clients.
Prior to law school, Jason learned about contracts and labor disputes first-hand as a union representative for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, Div. 301, in Virginia. His many years as a freight locomotive engineer taught him to see around corners and think logically. “On a freight train, you need to think two miles ahead and two miles behind,” he observes. That skill that now serves him well as a litigator.
Jason joined Mountain Dearborn in 2021 as an Associate after a brief stint as a solo practitioner. During law school, he interned in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island with the Honorable John J. McConnell, Jr., and in the office of former Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy III, serving citizens of the Massachusetts Fourth Congressional District. He completed his legal studies in a semester-in-practice externship in the Rhode Island Superior Court with the Honorable Richard A. Licht. He also holds the rare distinction of figuring out a way to take and pass the bar exam before graduating from law school.
